One of the possibilities that I dread with pregnancy is being put on bedrest. I mean, there are times where, if I’m home for two nights in a row, I’m stir-crazy. I’ll just huff around the house and say, “God, I HATE this house! Why is this man HERE ALL THE TIME?! Am I the only one who knows how to put shit away?” and the only solace I can find is in the big eyes of my dogs, who love me as long as I can find the dog food. Bryan tends to immerse himself in Braves games during these times, which makes me hate the world even more. THE BRAVES?! REALLY?!
So, the idea of being in a house.. or a bed.. exclusively makes me ill. I just can’t. I won’t. Not willingly, anyhow.
Yes, I know that the baby has its own destiny in store and nothing that I can do will change that. My cousin Patty is the most lean, gorgeous woman I’ve ever met and she was still on bedrest. (My favorite part of Patty is that when she posts pics of her new baby online, she delicately covers the nu-nu. In any pic. Bathing? Conspicous hand or sponge placement. Sleeping? Odd draping of a blanket.)
So my new approach to “avoiding bedrest, 101″ began yesterday, when I popped in Shiva Rae’s Prenatal Yoga. They had ONE copy left when I was in Barnes and Noble the other day, so I used a gift card to pick it up.  I used to do yoga .. a few years ago, like it matters, right?.. and I loved it.
I’d like to highly recommend this DVD. However, I only got through the first section, lasting about fifteen minutes. Good news? That section works your flexibility and your core and your thighs. Italics were added to emphasize that OHMYGOD, MY THIGHS HURT LIKE A MOFO afterwards.
Shiva suggests you start with only 15 minutes, and that you pace your body as you feel comfortable. (This is my issue. After years of learning choreography on the fly, I want to mimick the most toned one up there. You know, the NOT pregnant one.) But, in her defense, she has a lady in each trimester performing the poses, some modified as necessary. And she performs voiceovers of the moves, rather than talking through them as she poses, so it’s a way more relaxed environment.
I highly recommend the DVD. My back feels much more loose, and I slept worlds better last night. Shiva targets the muscle groups specifically used for birthing (which, might I add, are muscles that you use in other.. endeavors as well), so you can feel good knowing that you’re benefiting your baby in the long run.
I can’t get my ankle behind my ear just yet.. but soon.
