I know that when I write about tv shows, it’s most often for me the kvetch about how horrible something was, or how grave an injustice, but I wanted to take a minute and tell you something that I watched last night that was beeeyoooutiful.
So You Think You Can Dance had its performance show on last night (which I lurve, but Bryan has to flip between that and The Next Best Thing and sometimes even Last Comic Standing). But Bryan was off doing some nursery crap, so I had the tube all to myself. (It was GLORIOUS.)
Anyone else watch it and worry that Mary was coming out of that top? I just knew there was gonna be one WOOOOHOOOO too many and then we were going to see her hoohahs.
Aside from my worry that we would have another Nipplegate incident, I was thrilled to see that one of my celebrity loves, Wade Robson, was a choreographer that night (rather than a judge). He does the most awesome hip hop stuff and I was excited to see what he was going to do with Hok (Hawk), the breakdancer.
And then totally bummed to see that they were doing a jazz piece. JAZZ?! Come on! Blech. I’ll bet it’s some classical piece that uses streamers.
NOPE. Wade created the most gorgeous, fluid-yet-stacatto, moving piece of dance I’ve seen in a LOOONG time. He gave Hok a piece that showcased the amazing body control that breakdancing has afforded him, and his partner shined in the piece as a fluid flower, blossoming. Set to a piece from Memoirs of a Geisha, it was just more than I ever could’ve expected to watch on this show. On Fox.
Even the judges couldn’t find words. The immortal Debbie Allen was the guest judge last night (tell me THAT’S not the dream of every dancer.. being judged by Debbie Allen), and she just sat, speechless. It was truly the most amazing thing I’ve seen.
And in case you missed it, this fantastic choreographer/dancer is giving a workshop this July at Huntsville’s new theatre, Merrimack Hall. Everyone should definitely look into it (there’s a meet and greet for prego non-dancers like me), because dayum.. he’s just amazing.
If anyone finds a clip on YouTube or something, LEMME KNOW!
