Ech. I’m tired of writing meaningless, pointless stuff. It all feels weightless, like cotton candy. Sweet, but not filling. Just enough to get your hands sticky and make you angry that you took the time to fool with it. Empty carbs.
I don’t do well with actresses whose egos far exceed their talent, and my God, are they out there. I can’t stand it when an actress (or actor, for that matter, but I am harsher on women.. being one and all) cannot take a note adequately, and because of their incredible ineptitude on stage, they find fault with the note, rather than the lackluster performance THEY gave that inspired it. I hate moody actresses, who will throw tantrums in rehearsal to distract everyone (usually unsuccessfully) from the fact that they are creating a void of talent.. a black hole of stage-presence, if you will.. the second their little toe hits the stage. And most importantly, I hate self-important actresses, who feel that they are more useful on a pedestal than on a set piece. Those actresses I loathe most of all, and make it my personal mission to strike them down.
Sorry. Call from the teacher put me there.
You know, I’m not quite done yet. It’s about respect. I think there is a SEVERE lack of respect being taught in theatre today. It’s not only respect for elders, children, etc.. all of those common courtesies which are seeming less and less common.. although I do think those are building blocks of being a useful human being. I’m speaking of respect for the craft, respect for the director, and (my largest pet peeve) respect for other actors and tech crew. When you throw a temper tantrum, you are disrupting rehearsal for everyone else who shares the stage with you. And when you find yourself too gifted to accept a note awarded to you by someone from the directorial staff, you are disrespecting the person who CAST you, and are still continuing the disrespect for your fellow castmates. Notes are not there to criticize.. they are there to assist you in furthering the show as a whole. Because, as I want to shout from the mountaintops of theatre..
it is not about you.
Handle your business. If someone gives you a tool to improve yourself, take it gratefully. And then work to make it work. Doing what you’ve always done just really pisses off everyone else, especially if they know that you’ve been privy to the info. And seriously, you were cast to do a job.
DO YOUR JOB.
Thank you.
