The Boy and I are doing some birthday shopping Saturday morning when I’m asked to explain — again — that any money The Boy’s stuff makes at the yard sale this next weekend (PLEASE COME BUY SOME OF MY SHIT!), he can keep to buy new junk that he’ll never use.

The Boy: Awesome!  I have my first job ever next weekend.

Me: Well, yeah.  You kinda do.

The Boy: And I don’t even have to be there!

Me: Well, okay, yeah.

The Boy: I’ll be making money, even though I’m sick!!

Me: Sick?  What do you mean, sick?

The Boy: Yeah!  I got the summer fever, Sarah!

Seussian Weekend

This weekend, all of my Dr. Seuss animated movies came in.  We watched Dr. Seuss on the Loose yesterday (which involved some Sneetches, Green Eggs & Ham, and those ole stubborn Zaxx) and this morning we watched The Lorax.

I’m so lame. The Lorax, the damn Lorax, made me cry.

Now, in my (meager) defense, it’s a completely different story now that I have little ones that we’re leaving our earth for. And to watch a cartoon made 20-some-odd years ago warn us of our environmental destruction drove home that we may be too far gone to turn around.

Anyway, moving on: let me highly recommend these DVDs. My favorite part of these is by far the music; while the animation is sometimes lacking (it’s not as sharp as our Pixar eyes are accustomed to nowadays), the music is lush and harmonious, often consisting of Seussian-catchy lyrics and four or five part harmonies. I think it speaks volumes that I still knew every single word to every single song (some, even in harmony) twenty years after I last heard them. The Boy was entranced by all of them, and I’m sure Binja will spend many hours spellbound as well.

Because this is the first day in recent history that work is slow AND I don’t have a tech night to be prepping for, I want to tell you this very weird and surreal even that took place last night.  And even more so, I want you to tell me that I’m being weird and surreal about something that just ISN’T.

I’ll start with Saturday.  Saturday, I was carrying the Binja in his baby-sling-carrier-thingie as we marched down to Five Points when Bryan’s cell phone rang.  It was Nanny, The Boy’s grandmother on his BioMom’s side.  She called.. just to chat.  Which I thought was weird.  And she kept asking about my son.  Which I thought was even weirder.

Now, I will say that Nanny is very sweet.  She came to the hospital to see the new baby, she has offered to babysit several times, and she’s a very good grandmother to The Boy.

But I thought that was odd.

So last night, we go to take The Boy back to BioMom and we find out that she’s at a family member’s house.  We head that way, and as Bryan and The Boy approach the front door, Nanny appears.  I see her talk to Bryan for a second, and Bryan gestures to the car.  Here comes Nanny.  (more…)
