Love Poem for Five Points, #68
Category: The Unexplainable |

I love my neighborhood.

I love it because the light spills through the big trees so nicely in the springtime.  It just automatically makes me happy to see the leaf patterns on the ground.

I love meeting my husband for lunch at Sazio so we can people-watch.  Even though I’m not a huge fan of the lunch menu, we’re still at a fine restaurant, within walking distance of our house, and it’s inevitable that we’ll see eight people we know during lunch.

I love walking to Propst.  Even though I can now utilize our mail-order pharmacy for long term medications, I enjoy walking down there for something quick, and buying a magazine and a water while I’m there.

I love our neighborhood characters.  I love that we know them all.  I love that we go walking at night and run into these people and know not to be afraid.

I love that the BP has the best selection of wines on this side of town.  And that they hit on me EVERY time I go in there. (And you should see how they drool over Delle.)

I’ve already pontificated on my adoration of PoBoy Factory, so suffice it to say: I love PoBoy Factory, period.

There is just nowhere else in Huntsville I would rather live.  Five Points is the place to be.

    - I love the alleys of Five Points. The front of a house is what we want the world to see, but the view from the alley reveals the secrets.

    - I love the Hi & Bye store, just down the street from our house, where I can get a bottle of wine and talk politics with my friend Mohammed.

    - I love the wall around Schiffman Stadium, built by the CCC during the Depression.

    - I love the rows of identical mill houses on Humes.

I love that you’re our neighbor, and Bryan can walk home from your place after a night of debauchery. (Which you guys should TOTALLY do again, by the by.)

I too love the alleyways, although I’d never thought about it before. I always am amazed at how different some houses look from them! (Sometimes it’s “Wow, what a crappy house that really is” and sometimes it’s “Wow, did you know the house was that damn big?”)
