Words, Words, Words

Quick note not relating to anything else: I am letting my hair grow out.  Why?  Because it has no curl anymore AND we watched “X-Men 3: The Last Stand” the other night, and my goal in life is now to look like Famke Jensen.  I think I can do it.

So today, I’m going to share with you this amazing piece of television we discovered last night: EgoTrip’s The White Rapper Show on VH1.  OHMYDEARLORD, we laughed so hard and were so drawn into this completely ridiculous spectacle.  Trying to find the next Eminem, they auditioned thousands of white wanna-be rappers, and narrowed it down to ten with a sliver of talent. (Some more than others.) It was so entertaining.  Two honky thumbs up!

An interesting point of this show was how the race aspect is treated.  It’s common knowledge that there is a very prominent term in rap, but it’s not allowed to be used on the show.  In fact, if one of the rappers DOES slip up and use the notorious racial slur, they must wear a 15 lb. “bling” necklace that loudly states “N-WORD” in diamonds.  In public.  Wherever they go.  It’s huge, it’s heavy, it’s LOUD, and it’s humbling.

I thought, “Man, what a cool idea.”  It’s not out to change their mind; if they believe that the n-word is an acceptable philosophy, so be it.  But they will think twice about using it openly.  Could you imagine what responsibility something like this could have on our modern day society, where pride comes before all else?  A scarlet ‘n’, if you will.

What word would you want represented with such a punishment?  Mine would be “whore”.  As someone who has been given that label most of my life (and for the most part, undeservedly), I think people don’t understand what weight that word holds.  It marks you.  You’re suddenly less than human.  That’s mine.

What’s yours?

I feel dirty even writting it down, but the word “cunt” has always been my most abhorred adjective.

“Fat” is a good one, Ra. I don’t think people understand how deeply that word cuts.

And Delle.. the C word is still unspeakable to me. VM was really tough for that.

But I love hearing other people say it now. :)
