You’d Think I’d Know How to Handle This By Now.

You’re all assuming that just because I’ve had to help raise one boy that I’d have the slightest clue about how to do it properly. Well, YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY WHEN YOU ASSUME.

Tony: Sharks like to eat fish.

Me: Yep, they sure do.

Tony: Know what else likes to eat fish?

Me: What?

Tony: Blue hairs.

Me: ….

Tony: Blue hairs really love to eat fish.

Me: Tony, we don’t say that about..

Tony: BUT THEY DO. THEY LOVE FISH. IT’S WHAT THEY EAT.

Me: Bud, that’s just not nice to call people blue hairs. Not nice.

Tony: But .. that’s what they’re called.

Me: Who called them that?

Tony: YOU DID.

Me: NO I MOST CERTAINLY DID NOT.

Tony: Yes, you did! When we were at the lake, and we saw him flying by, you said, “That’s a blue hair!”

Me: .. blue heron, Tony. HerON.

You’d think that after having a discussion with Jack about racism, I’d have been prepared for a discussion with Tony about ageism.

Here's where I am!

    Hilarious.

Ren said to my dad, “I like my black grandpa.” Because my dad was wearing a black shirt. But my pseudo-stepfather is African American. It was kind of awesome.

Down here in the land of the blue hairs, this strikes me as exceedingly funny.

While watching the Superbowl, the 3yo says, “Mom! Ocho Cinco is BROWN?”

I froze. FROZE. Immediately 70 thousand thoughts are running through my head – why all of a sudden is she picking up on skin color? What answer is she looking for? WHY COULDN’T SHE HAVE ASKED HER FATHER?!

    Me: “Um. Yep. But that…”

    Her: “COOL!”

Good thing your dogs keep backyard bird-watching to the basics, like squirrels. I can’t wait to hear how you explain that the small, gray bird hanging upside-down is a titmouse.
