For those of you who had considered coming to see Perky’s, I offer you even more evidence as to why you’re better off catching the rerun of “Nanny 911″: a review of a local, unbiased patron.
i also was offered entertainment in the form of a play. an original one, by the aforementioned director. i loved it-i thought it was funny and some parts had the potential to be touching.
see, the rumor was that it was crappy. of course i’d only heard that from one source, but anyway. just because a show is corny and predictable does NOT make it crap.
and i believe if the show is crap it’s ultimately the actor’s fault. we’re just prideful enough to deem it the writing or the directing.
a friend of mine helped create a local tradition, “shakespeare on the mountain”, and finally it went downhill due to some not-so-great direction. it was his last year to be involved, and even though the blocking was crap and the casting was crap, it turned out to be the best SOTM ever. you want to know why? because the actors knew that in the end it was in their hands, and they made it what they thought it should be.
i didn’t see any bad actors last night. i saw one who didn’t care about the show, which is worse than bad acting. you said yes to it, so suck it up and finish with a bang instead of dropping focus or breaking character because you don’t care enough about your fellow cast members to be in the moment with them. you’re supposed to be a team, after all.
most of the actors had perfect instincts and great characterizations. one in particular had a beautiful voice that really surprised me. another was so real with his redneck drawl (others seemed to struggle slightly with the southern; they obviously don’t have hick relatives here to learn from) that afterwards i tried to listen to his “real” voice.
the set was fantastic and the costume were hysterical. i howled with laughter most of the time, and i’m glad i went. i learned a little something about the effect an apathetic actor can have on a show.
and now, i’ll strive to never be that actor.
I still contend, as do MANY whom I’ve spoken to, that the material is not that good. But, as everyone is entitled their opinion, I thought I would share another reason as to why not to come:
.. because I’m just too damn apathetic to perform for you.
