So, Bryan’s already spilled the beans about our latest endeavor. We’ve decided to buy a house.
Which I’m alternately psyched about and dreading at the same time.
I HATE MOVING. Hate it with a purple passion. Hate it with a fervor unbridled by a thousand suns. I hate the packing, I hate the unpacking, I hate LIVING IN BOXES. Oh, just thinking about it makes me want to go bathe. All of that chaos. All of that disorganization. Stuff just laying in boxes, with no order or rhyme or reason.. ::shudder::
But, before we get to all of that joyous seizure-inducing kryptonite-to-my-OCD, we have to actually figure out which house we want to buy. This is proving to be much more thwarting than moving. This is proving to be what makes my hair gray.
See, Bryan and I have the same taste in houses. But finances? Not so much. While I look around our market today and say, “We should shop about $10K higher than our price range and then bargain them down”, Bryan looks around our market and says, “Look! We can own a 7 bedroom, 18 bath house in the ghetto! And save money!”
We also don’t always agree on location. We both concur that our ideal location is where we are now; it’s an ironic stab of fate that where we’ve rented for the past four or seven years is an area in which we actually can’t afford to buy. So we each have our second choice. Which, of course, is not necessarily the same.
And then there’s our commute. Bryan works in the city, so his commute won’t be greatly affected by any move to any location. But The Boy still lives out in BFE, i.e. the place that plays “Dueling Banjos” when you drive in, i.e. the place that they originally were going to shoot Deliverance but determined it was too scary. The place that inspired The Hills Have Eyes. You get my drift? Well, regardless, this place is not close to anywhere in town, but you could shop in places that make it a little LESS torturous to drive. However, moving in that direction makes MY commute to work that much suckier. There is no good answer here, obviously. A whole paragraph down, and I have no good answers.
Truth be told, this is an endeavor I’ve wanted to undertake for years now, and the timing is just perfect now. The market is in our favor right now, and I’m excited about being able to really “do up” a house. A house that we get to keep. That’s nice.
I am sad about leaving our neighborhood. As I drove home yesterday with the windows down and saw people I knew and places I love and the dogwoods are starting to bloom.. I’ll miss our little street.
If we ever can agree on a frickin’ house to move to.

OH, I love moving! Not so much the packing and all that crap but the new house smell and the unpacking and having everything in its place. Thats my flavor of ocd- I unpacked t his house in two days, by day 3 the boxes were recycled. I love to unpack!
Enjoy the process, you will find something great. And serisouly, Im sure you will score since its totally a buyers market and you dont have to sell your house first.
Good luck.
Christina’s last blog post..The weather outside is frightful.
Good luck with the house hunt! I’m sure you will find the perfect house. Let me know if you need quotes on homeowners insurance!
There’s dogwoods all over Huntsville, so do not despair. Also, there are houses that are cheaper but near in the older, ’50’s neighborhood behind ours, you know, Bide a Wee and all. There are some cool houses on the side of the mountain, too, and one’s for sale. The school district is not so hot, though, but of course, you intend to homeschool , so that’s not a problem.
I’ll miss YOU most of all, Scarecrow.
Are you worried about school zones or are you banking on AAA?
Aardvark’s last blog post..Wake up Mommy!!!
We’re checking out all options. I’m definitely taking school zones into consideration.. which means we won’t be moving into Johnson territory, BRYAN.
It’s not Five Points, nor the medical district inundated with homes full of flavor and personality, but there are some nice houses with a little character in Mill Village. Mill Village has recently had a lot of people come in and start flipping/renovating houses, but there are some deals to be had still, I’m sure. (There are also still some homes that haven’t received the attention, but you do have that Merrimack Theatre there, too, for you the theatre goddess.)
Aardvark beat me to it. School zones should be priority number one. Secondly, should be a neighborhood where T AND The Boy will be safe to play in their front and back yards. Virginia ( if there’s one thing she knows, its real estate) told me that location is always key. You can alter your house to suite you, but you cannot remodel your neighborhood. So…NO GHETTO!
