WANTED: Cheap Laptop

A recent exploration of my company’s mostly-generous maternity leave policies had me moping over one thing: they totally keep their laptop when I begin my leave.  Which means, you know, I can’t spontaneously update with pictures of poopy diapers, spit-up soaked shirts, and other things you know you are thirsting for.

So Bryan and I have decided to look into purchasing a laptop for our home.

Thing is, we’re a simple folk.  We don’t need any fancy bells and whistles (Mom, we don’t need a PowerMac), we don’t need gaming capabilities.. we are basically looking for an automatic typewriter that will carry a dynamic IP address.  We need something WiFi capable, but not much else.  A CD burner would be nice, but not entirely necessary.

Those of you who have purchased in the last six months or so, what tidbits of advice do you have?  Or if you yourself have one for sale, hit me up already!

Here's where I am!

Click on the icons below to follow me around the web. In a nice way. Please be nice.

I got a good deal on mine at Costco. (You’re surprised, I know.) I paid $899, and Todd Hess told me during R&J that he’d bought the same model (with all the same upgrades) for $1500. It made me happy. For me, not him. :-) I’ll let you know if I see anything clearanced there. (That’s how I picked up this one.)

Um, you need a mac. Because it will last longer and be a better investment. Andres bought his VAIO one year ago and hates it. The damn thing is so slow.

K, I have an old, old Toshiba from 2000. It has Ubuntu Linux on it with Firefox web browser. You’re welcome to borrow it for a while. Or… check out the Dell small business website. Christina got a laptop there a few months ago for ~$550.

Dell’s little secret, often much cheaper than the prices given on the Dell front site.
