I (heart) Five Points
Category: The Unexplainable |

My tummy is KILLING me.  It’s like, all of a sudden, my stomach has decided it’s going to quit digesting food.  It’s just going to hold it in there — WHOLE — until .. well, I don’t know when.  All I know is that every time I rolled over last night, I felt my entire dinner sloshing around.  Can you imagine how gross that feels?  In that huge, hollow gullet?

Ah, pregnancy.  Such joy.

So on to happier things.  I wanted to talk about how much I love my neighborhood for a moment.  We had earlier news this week about Star Market expanding (HOORAY!!), and that truly makes my love blossom.  Also, they’re starting to move forward with their plans to “renovate” Five Points (old-timey lamp posts.. benches.. redone walkways), so that makes me happy.

But mostly, I love our neighborhood because of the people in it.

For instance, one Wednesday afternoon, I sat on my bench outside of my house while talking to Ronda.  While I sat there, Scott Morgan drove by and stopped to run over and feel my belly.  Caroline rode by on her new bicycle.  The Bennett kid drove by and honked.  All in an hour period.

HOW COOL IS THAT?  It’s pretty damn cool.

Bryan visited an old friend in Atlanta and was amazed by how she had created a community out of what was essentially a ghetto.  Her child knew EVERYBODY, and there was not an unfriendly face.  Bryan came home wanting that for The Boy and for Lil Peep.  So we’ve been walking nightly and talking to people we meet.

Last night, I took Charlie out for a walk and guess who joined us?  Fern.  Crazy ole Fern, who we constantly see digging through garbage cans and rubbish to add to her yard collection.  She approached us with a flashlight and asked if she could join us.  Charlie, oddly enough, calmly went to her feet and sat down.  How could I say no to that?  So we walked down our street together, her telling me of her finds that day.

We may be renters in our neighborhood, and certainly, that’s not ideal in the grand scheme of things.  But all in all, we love where we live and are so happy to be there.
